O’Neill released a major work of historical and contemporary research on the topic of Irish music in 1913 titled Irish Minstrels and Musicians. Not only did it advance the serious study of Irish music, it also was generous in describing current musicians both in Ireland and amongst the Diaspora.
The Chief O’Neill Traditional Music Festival was set up in 2013 in Bantry to commemorate the centenary of this important publication. It will take place again this year on the 7th to the 9th of September. There will be many fun events, starting with a session outside Quill’s in Bantry on 11:30 am on the 7th.
